May we take the opportunity to wish you a blessed and joyous 2012 to you and your loved ones. We hope that you had a wonderful time celebrating the holiday season and look forward to what will be another interesting year for the ACS OBA.

Past - Summary of the OBA’s activities in 2011

2011 was an exciting and busy one for the ACS family and the ACS OBA which organized many of the 125th Anniversary events. The OBA kicked off our 125th Anniversary celebrations on January 20th with a Lunar New Year gathering at Sarang at Orchard Central, which was followed by our annual Past vs present Games on February 27th.

On March 1st 2011, Founder’s Day, we celebrated 125 glorious years of our history and God’s blessings at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with close to 9,000 students, staff, alumni and guests. Old Boys Rev Dr Norman and Rev Dr Gordon Wong led the Thanksgiving Service that was graced by Guest-of-Honor and Old Boy, Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen. Following the end of the service and departure of the invited guests, the students and staff remained to enjoy “ACS’ Got Talent”, an informal and entertaining friendly competition highlighting the talent of all the 6 schools.

Later that day, we continued in the spirit of celebration, feasted and enjoyed each other’s fellowship at the 125thFounder’s Day Dinner held at the Suntec Convention Centre for over 1,250 people. Rev Dr Norman Wong and Nathan Hartono were wonderful Masters of Ceremony for the fun-filled evening.

Barely 3 weeks following the completion of our landmark Founder’s Day celebrations, the OBA collaborated with ACJC on March 26th and co-hosted the ACJC- OBA Careers Talk that featured four distinguished alumni who are leaders in their fields of Banking, Law, Accounting and Medicine.

The first-ever ACS OBA and MGS Alumnae Association Social Mixer event on July 9th was a huge success and a unique opportunity for inter-school and multi-cohort socialising and networking. Through the power of social media and by word-of-mouth, about 200 alumni from the ACS family and MGS descended upon the hip and trendy ACSian-owned Balaclava at ION Orchard. Truly a sign of the times!!!

And of course the 125th Anniversary celebrations of the ACS family would not be complete without an event that showcased the sporting tradition of our school. In the spirit of the ACS 125th anniversary celebrations, all the six units of the ACS family of schools gathered together at the ACS (Independent) Swimming and Sports Complex on the morning of 5 August to participate in the ACS 125 Sports Festival.

The last quarter of the year saw the OBA host a special Retired Teachers’ Celebration Dinner on Teachers’ Day, September 1st at the ACS (Barker Road) campus. A great time was had by both the retired staff as well as Old Boys who came in full force to pay tribute to their dear teachers.

Present - The Establishment of the ACS Foundation

Independent of the OBA’s activities but noteworthy nonetheless, is the establishment of the Anglo-Chinese Schools Foundation (“ACS Foundation”) by the ACS Board of Governors to commemorate our 125th Anniversary. The objective is to be the umbrella Foundation for the ACS schools and to assist them in their efforts to enhance the holistic education needs of our students and teachers, and through them, to share with society the blessings and rewards of receiving an ACS education. The ACS Foundation aims to centralize the philanthropic efforts of the ACS Family and provide a one-stop solution for charitable giving to the ACS Schools. Future - Activities in the months ahead

In the upcoming months, we have much to look forward to. In February, we have the Past vs Present Games on Sunday, February 26th, in March, our Founder’s Day Dinner held at the Orchard Hotel on Thursday, March 1st, and the OBA AGM on Friday, March 30th. As Tay Peng Siang announced his 75th birthday today, having been born on 23 Oct 1936, we wished him "Many Happy Returns of the Day". Present were Philip Ong, Kim Chye, Peng Siang, Chee Keng and Kian Ann.

Yes, they came @ 1230h, all eleven of them, to the ACS Class of 1955 lunch gathering to complete the 4th Quarter Lunch Schedule/2010. Kum Chuen co-ordinated the event.

After all the verbal exchanges, it was agreed that next year's quarterly lunches will be held here at this venue for convenience. Eng Soo sportingly volunteered to co-ordinate, via email, the first event which will be held in Mar 2011.

Eight ACS Septuagenarians, school friends for over six decades, met for lunch at the Chinese Swimming Club. Over oxtail, hairy crab salad and roasted salmon fillet, they mused about the uncertainty of tomorrow with the song "Ku Tak Tahu Hari Esokku".

They arrived at the Chinese Swimming Club enthusiastically, and greetings flowed freely. Yes, Chee Hong wanted the Oxtail, but the rest opted for Salmon.
Too bad - the others couldn't/didn't make it! (For one reason or another.)
Still, a good time was had by all! There was an experiential discourse on Taichi by Suan Juat and a reallife encounter with an ignoramus on accounting procedures by Swee Ming.

Anything achieved that afternoon? Yes, indeed. Chee Hong agreed to participate in a song item at the coming Peranakan-Indonesia Fellowship at PMC. If you're free and understand Bahasa, come-lah on Sat 6 Nov 2010 to hear him sing, accompanied by a music video prepared by Kian Ann for the occasion.

31: George's Gone But Not Forgotten

Today marks a month that George has gone to be in the presence of Jesus. But I will always remember him fondly.
55 years ago in 1955, we were in the Young People's Group (YPG) of Bethesda Katong when this picture was taken before we set out on our hike to Ayer Gemurroh. Notice how cool and relaxed Tian Soo (as he was then called) looked!

And then, 55 years later in Jan 2010 at the Anniversary of the Methodist Church of the Incarnation, see how he (now the Rev Dr George Wan Tian Soo) looked: so distinguished and confident in the presence of the celebrating congregation.

Boyish as this thought may be, but more than 55 years ago when we were kids living in the same neighbournood, it was Tian Soo who invited me to a pond near his house at Rambutan Road, and where with a freshly cut bamboo sapling as my first fishing rod, I hooked my first fish ( an ikan betok or climbing perch) to my childish delight.

Yes, George, you will never be forgotten but will stay in my heart till we meet again. For didn't somebody say: "Those who love the Lord never see one another for the last time"?

Today's newspaper carries the orbituary of our dear ACSClass55 classmate, the Rev Dr George Wan Tian Soo who was called home to be with the Lord yesterday 22 Mar 2010.

George has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith (2 Tim 4: 6-8) as a disciple of Jesus Christ, and now he goes into His divine presence with freedom and confidence (Eph 3:12). Praise the Lord.

No, it's not the latest competitor of Jack's Place.
It was a departure from the usual monthly ACSClass55 lunch. First, it's become the 1st Quarterly Lunch. Second, it's hosted at an ACSian home, in this case: Eng Soo's. But well done! It has seen the largest turn-out of date, thirteen to be exact. But it would have been fourteen if LKM had turned up as he said he would. Alamak, KM, where were you?

Third, there was no loss for words.They talked about dementia, potential build-up of mega powers, China's rising profile, Malaysian politics, LTA policies, the IRs and Singapore's future leaders.

Yes, the Mar 5 lunch is something for them to remember.
Thanks to Letty, ES's better half, who prepared the delicious mee-siam and bought the taukuahpau from Joo Chiat and the satay from Laguna Park, and other delicacies, there was more than enough to fill the hungry ACSians!

I've been wondering where George Wan has been keeping himself as he has not been attending the RELC group lunches lately.
...That is, until I bumped into him today having a quiet lunch - solo @ IMM.
You know, it's the Rev Dr ACSian55 I'm referring to.

As we exchanged updates, it was clear that he's just completed yet another mission trip.
And no, he won't be attending the coming lunch gathering at Eng Soo's place.

"Just back from Myanmar," he volunteered. And then, "I'm going to Uganda soon. Would you like to join me?"
"No way," I said, "I'm going to be orthopaedically investigated for some degeneration of the neck vertebra resulting in it touching a nerve and sending electrical impulses down my arm, hand and fingers," and so he relented.

19: The ACSClass55 Lunch Strategy for 2010

ACSian Kum Chuen has proposed an 8-point strategy for the 2010 Lunch gathering of ACS Class 55, the year being the 55th Anniversary year for our cohort.
He calls for us to keep the motto alive: The Best is yet to be, ACS Forever!

The strategy calls for a lunch to be held on a Friday each quarter, thus: 5 Mar, 4 Jun, 3 Sep and 3 Dec. Any ACSian55 can organize the lunch, beginning with KES (5 Mar), FSL (4 Jun) with 2 more slots up for grabs.

As usual, the lunch will be pro rata and below $20.00 per attendee.

So let's all give him our support for planning the strategy!

Come Christmas, ACSClass55 hope to receive from Henry Pang his photo-greetings of goodwill and view his family photo, which was always a delight to see.

11: Wesley Seniors Fellowship @ Fort Canning

After their monthly lunch, Albert, Swee Ming and Peng Siang went over to Wesley Seniors Fellowship where they met Seng Narp (WSF Chair) and Yan Chee and his wife Joyce. The programme started with Gospel Songs and a sermonette by Pastor Ivan. They enjoyed the fellowship, singing Songs of Yesteryears, watching a humorous skit and recitations of poetry on the theme of the day "An English Countryside". Casey's charming wife Lily recited "The Daffodils" bringing memories of nostalgia to the trio.

For ACSians 55 who are wondering what to do with some of their time, go to Wesley Seniors Fellowship on the first Monday of the month, 1.30pm - 5pm. Apart from the enjoyable singing fellowship, there's makan kecil, too.

9: In Memoriam - Mr Lee Hah Ing

REST IN PEACE, MR LEE

On 9 Sep 2009, the Straits Times reported that "FORMER Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) principal Lee Hah Ing, age 95, died of prostate cancer on Friday evening after a five-year battle with the disease."

ACSians of Class55 will remember Mr Lee as a very good and caring teacher who taught them Literature in Std 7.

Farewell, Mr Lee. We love you.

5: Meet a Pulau Ubin Green Snake

Ever held a green snake by the tail? You will if you go to Pulau Ubin and keep a sharp lookout for it.

The one I caught 2 days ago was climbing a vine near a roadside fence. It was about 5 feet long. Its tapering body was beautifully leaf green in colour. After a photo shoot and sighs of admiration for the wonder of nature, I released the creature into the wild, so that another nature lover can encounter and behold the beauty of creation.

No, it's not poisonous, I'm told.

4: That Monthly Lunch

The ACSClass55 of the RELC Group is preparing to skip their lunch at Garden Hotel Restaurant coming weekend because their lunch organizer informed his chums that 2 members of his family had contracted the H1N1 flu. The good news from his report is that it is relatively mild, compared to the common flu, so we can take heart from that.

The picture above is a recent lunch photo of the ACSClass55 of the Peace Centre Group who had theirs at the newly established Sophia Food Mall.

"Come and join us," says Swee Ming their lunch co-ordinator, "for some chit-chat and good food!" Yes, why not!

2: The Blue Ribbon for the Most Prolific Email Forwarder

This fine distinction must really go to FCChan, as evident from the Email Indox of ACSClass55. Nary a week passes by without him forwarding from various sources so-and-so's emails warning of fines for traffic offences, advice about health and the food we eat, philosophical and religious statements, and even one newsworthy item purportedly claimed as a life-style roadmap, a treatise entitled "Lee Kuan Yew on aging"!

Thanks very much, FCChan. Your forwarded emails have made the humdrum of our days that much more exciting, enabling us to vent anger at unjustifiable rules and regulations and take steps to avoid hefty fines by complying with them, not forgetting the fruits, in particular the banana, you recommend for us to eat for better health.

Hats off to you, indeed. We will now live longer and stronger, shouting ACS forever!

So all ACSians of Class 55 are encouraged to download photos from there ASAP before they are lost in cyberspace.
